Painting on vellum at Copsa Mare
For beginners and intermediate students.
11 – 17 September, 2022
The course will take place in the spacious botanical art studio of James & Rachel de Candole in the village of Copsa Mare in Southern Transylvania. The village is in an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounded by traditional grasslands and ancient forests home, to bear and wild boar.
The course will be an opportunity for students both new to vellum and improvers to learn my techniques for painting on this wonderful surface. We will look at a variety of skins, their production, individual characteristics and how to prepare the surface for painting. We will use the wide variety of subject matter in the surrounding area. Students will also have the opportunity to study the Transylvanium florilegium, a copy of which is owned by our hosts (19/150).
For those who are interested, I will include a presentation on the historical technique of drawing in metalpoint.
Whilst the course will help students develop their skills, it will be relaxed and fun and I look forward to sharing techniques, working, and exploring this beautiful area together.
